Tom Welling is NOT part of Justice League; DC explains why
As much as we all dream that Smallville’s Tom Welling become Superman on the big screen, a DC Comics big boss says “it aint’ happenin”!
Vice President for Creative Affairs for DC Comics, Gregory Noveck is helping the studio find and adapt DC characters for film and television. In an interview with Voices from Krypton, Noveck says casting Tom Welling (or the other Superman Brandon Routh) in the new Justice League movie would confuse the issue. The new JLA movie and actors need to stand on their own, separate from the previous versions of superhero movies. So the same goes for why Christian Bale is not being cast as Batman. “I think part of it is that the character is larger than the actor. If you look at Batman, Superman and Justice League as separate franchises, if all of a sudden you have Brandon in it but you don’t have Christian, then what movie is it?”
Noveck further says it’s better to have different actors play Superman in movies- “These are all Superman, but they’re different versions”.

look I agree when he becomes to old..replace him, we know christopher reeves as superman, tom welling is by far the only and best to replace him, its sad, but i dnt own the franchise. Still well done on bringing dc comics and all alike to life, there is no greater gift to a child than superhero’s and when you grow up for it to become “real”

Yeah look guys, I agree that its ridiculous that hes not being cast, DC comics big boss must have enough money, cause if he had to cast Tom Welling as Superman in the justice league movie or in any other Superman movie, I promise you his profit, hype, sales etc.. would blow the roof of any other project he’s currently busy with. Only Tom Welling has ever been able to meet up to my expectations as Superman

I must disgree with the latter statement. For all those dedicated Smallville Fans…Thomas Welling IS Superman. He expresses the character as though it were himself, personally. His fears, his worries, his happiness, and his sorrow…everything he is meant to express as his character, he expresses in his eyes. It’s hard to find actor’s with that skill. I believe that Tom Welling is Perfect for becoming the big time Superman. Not only is he appealing in a phyiscal manner, he has the personality to pull off what Superman was like in the comics. What he was REALLY like, not what daranged obsessors made him into.

i cant believe they don’t want to use tom welling for superman. It doesn’t make sense. Its like making the Justice League movie without the Justice league!

For years and years, we, the viewing public, have sat back and watched GREAT franchise’s go to pot because of asinine thought process’s such as this. NEVER in the Superman series have there been more than one portrayal of the character IN the same time period, either on the big screen or the small screen. Yet here, in the year 2007, we have TWO. Yes, Smallville is about Clark Kent, but who is Superman if he is not Clark Kent and vice versa? Having more than one actor portraying Superman is both a let-down and confusing, especially to people who are not familiar with the Superman legacy. This is the most likely reason why “Superman Returns” did not do as well as expected. That and the fact the writers were allowed to completely dissrespect the original movie series. Brandon Routh is NOT Superman. A subperb Clark Kent, but not Superman. Tom Welling, on the other hand, has grown into what Superman was always MEANT to be. A strong, caring and higly comppassionate being from another planet (on the show, not in real life). The way he portrays Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent is reminiscent of Christopher Reeves. This combined with the fact that Christopher Reeves also thought Tom Welling WOULD be the next Superman would lead ALL of us Superman fans to believe that Tom Welling would, indeed, be the next Superman. After all, Smallville is the story leading us into Clark Kent’s “leap” into being the Man Of Steel. The next LOGICAL step, would be to bank on following Tom Welling has, and to do a movie to show what the characters next step was BEFORE he became Superman (talking about the JLA). Then, depending on the success of that, adapt it for a TV series, and end with another movie. Just like Toby McGuire is the new Spiderman, so too is Tom Welling, Superman. The television shows are SUPPOSED to be what the viewer’s want, not what directors and writers want. The entertainment industry is becoming much like the U.S. government, take what we give you and like it. Tom Welling SHOULD be this era’s Superman, not Brandon Routh or any other “unknown”. I guess this is yet ANOTHER “Superman” movie I won’t waste my money on.

Jim & Belinda, you said everything we wanted to ear… this thing is about making money profit, I didn’t watch Superman Returns because Tom Welling wasn’t Superman and the movie sucked (apparently) and I’m really sad that Tom won’t play Superman in JLA :\…

I MUST agree that TOM WELLING should be Superman. In Smallville as well as on the JLA. I don’t understand why the studio would build up the Justice League and then not let Tom play Superman, or any of the other characters play themselves. My youngest son got his name from my husband and I watching Smallville. He is Clark Kent Manning. It was suppose to be a joke initially but, liked it and whose going to mess with a name like that? My husband Steve is a huge fan of Superman and always has been. We really miss Christopher Reeve but, I thought that Tom would be great to replace him as Superman. It was awesome to see the both of them on screen together. I beg you, directors and producers at the top of the chain, please reconsider what we all have been asking for. PLEASE reconsider putting Tom in this role. We don’t want to be disappointed just because you think it makes sense. We are the ones forking out the money or taking the time to watch your shows, why don’t we have a say in it as well? Put out a poll asking how many people want to see Tom play this role on TV as well as on screen and just see what type of a response you get. Make sure you air it on the CW after or during Smallville and on a website as well as text messaging. In Alaska, we don’t have Verizon phones or Sprint so it’s hard to get any input from us up here. I have a degree for writing for children and teenagers and I wish with the strike going on right now I could use it but, I don’t live in California and no one pays attention to people in Alaska so this is how I am getting my opinion out. I sure hope it works. Thursday nights are always set aside just for Smallville. It’s very big in our house. I would, very much, like to see it eventually turn into Justice League of America.

I’m foaming at the mouth here. Jim & Belinda, as well as the lovely Chery Manning, are right along my line. Tom Welling IS Superman. Ahem..do I need to mention that Christopher is even IN an Episode of Smallville with Tom? Hello…you can’t stop genius, and you’re stupid to try. Tom Welling IS amazing for the part…and he’s got that goregous boyish good look to him. -The BEST Superman of all time will ALWAYS be Christopher Reeves, but..Tom Welling is his next in line…Tom Welling is the son of the superman legend, and it’s his time to claim the title. I’m told, though, he did not WANT this job, in this movie.

I’m not even a big Tom Welling fan, but only an idiot wouldn’t hire him for Superman. The last Superman movie was a joke. I know you might have gotten a ‘better actor’ in Routh. But Welling’s inability to really act makes him Clark Kent. He’s awkward and doesn’t understand Earth or it’s people. He doesn’t understand emotions. That’s why I like how Tom Welling always seems sort of confused. I dunno if this sounds like I’m being completly sarcastic, but this is genuinely sincere.

i think its just bogus that welling isnt being hired for this position i beleive i read dont know how true this is, but welling was a shoe in for the position, until George miller came on as director, apparently his thoughts are that he doesnt want tv’s superboy because he is damaged goods. I dont know how true it is but from what i have read on all different websites up until george miller was confirmed i didnt read anything saying tom welling was not superman. as far as im concerned tom welling is the only superman and there should be a petition and send it off to the big boss’s of WB and most of all if they are having these no name actors for JLA i would much rather superman: man of steel not be pushed back to make way for a movie im sure alot of comic fans will boycott. as stated by many people commenting before me welling is the only one who can play superman for reasons stated above.

I agree you people in Hollywood suck, you couldn’t make the right decision if it was given to you by a genie who said this is the way to make millions of dollars no brainer. Tom Welling is the only actor besides Chris Reeves who is Superman. I hope you spend lots of money and your movie bombs. Don’t see Justice League and maybe they’ll start listening to our opinions. We are the ones who pay them big bucks, so don’t pay them. And another thing quit being buttheads and give the writers what they deserve we pay the money for that to in ratings and get our shows (new episodes) back on we deserve.

We can go on and on..and on..and on..about this. But, from what I heard..Tom Welling doesn’t even WANT to do it. I’m not so sure if that is simple rumor or cold hard truth, but..what voice do we really get to have? Tom Welling is an amazing actor. We saw him in Judge Judy..the Cutest teen, ever. He gave ‘my friend’s hot older brother’ a new meaning in Cheaper By the Dozen, one and two…he totally blew us away in The Fog, with dashing looks..sexy shower scenes..(Oolala), and who doesn’t love Smallville? Come on, ladies..How many men have luscious FULL lips, a bubble butt, and goregous ever changing eyes. Tom Welling is simply..amazing. His eyes appear as though..they could devour your very soul. Exploding stars…Haha. He’s just goregous, and he molds himself so well into that…Clumsy, silly, dorky-nerdy, farm boy thing. In all his movies he’s such a great guy..such an un-knowing charmer. He could have my heart any day.

I’ll make this brief… Christopher Reeve passed down the Superman Torch to TOM WELLING!!! Does everyone remember Dr. Swann??? That wasn’t just Chris Reeve acting as a character on Smallville. That was (to me) a representation of Christopher Reeve passing down his Superman legacy to Tom Welling. Brandon Routh was a complete phony! He was playing a wannabe Chris Reeves. And I’ll give it to him… Brandon Routh can sure do a great impression of Chris Reeve playing Superman. In my opinion, Routh was only cast because he looks a lot like Chris Reeve and kind of sounds like him. But so what!?!? Christopher Reeve didn’t pass down the Superman torch to Routh. He passed it down to Welling! I know I have a lot of exclamation points, but it just pisses me off to think that anyone other than Tom Welling could be playing Superman. So if you agree with me, lets all just hope and pray that Tom Welling will play Superman on the big screen. Hopefully in the Justice League Movie…

Ha. I still say Tom Welling is the best. Oh, and..if he doesn’t want to be in the tights..I think his wife should egg him on to do it. Because, frankly…sex sells. And let’s face it, ladies..gents..: The man got it going on down there. SEX.SELLS. It’s the more shallow part of his career, but it’s the truth. That man could bring a woman to her knees with one toothy smile. Got’chu believing in the phrase ‘Purrrrfect’. Haha.

Ok, I’m obviously in agreement with everyone here. (only an idiot would post anything stating Tom shouldn’t be superman). But seeing as how the last post was made in October of last year, has there been any updates as far as him playing the role in JLA? I also agree that Routhe played a horrible C.K./Superman, yea…he looks a little like Reeves, SO WHAT!…..he overacted on the bumbling Clark, and he was even more of a bumbling Superman. Hollywood is definately NOT getting my money if I don’t see Tom cast as C.K./Superman.

Correction to my last post…the last post before mine was in January of 08, but still it’s going on 2 months with nothing, this is a huge topic, IMHO, and we should keep pushing and pushing…we, THE FANS, control these peoples paychecks. Sure, Die hard JLA fans will obviously wanna see this movie, regardless of who portrays who, but, there are more Smallville/Tom Welling fans in this world, than JLA fans.

It’s a constant battle over this, and as Ice has so kindly asked; where’s the update? Who knows more of what’s going on? If you ask me, the people responsible for creating and managing these ‘Superhero’ movies..should lay off the cheez. Iron Man looks ’bout..well, let’s just say..some comics are better off as comics. At any rate, While I love Smallvile and own it..it’s not quite..on Track with the whole Superman deal. In fact; a LOT of things in the story line are incorrect. Who the hell is Chloe?..Butttt..Tom Welling is still the best Clark, hands down. Come on, boy’s got the characteristics down PAT. He’s got boy-ish good looks to go with those soul-comsuming eyes, and that’s the type of Superman we all know and love. Superman has always had this..”I’m a dork, I wear glasses’ type way. And Clark has it. He has that ‘Clueless’ ‘tude going on, and it’s adorable, and very Clark Kent.

Tom welling was born to play superman. We all know this by seeing him on Smallville. He is the only actor that has spent more time playing Clark Kent/superman the longest than anyone else. So keep him as superman.Christopher reeve will always be the best superman around, and Dean Cain wasn’t bad as superman either, but Routh sucked. ALL us superman fans already know Reeve, Cain and Welling as superman. So if you want to make a movie of superman, why bring in someone new. If you can’t get Tom Welling to do the part then at least get Dean Cain….I would personally choose Welling, over Cain anyday. but the point i’m making is these actors have already been successful at playing superman, if you want the new superman movies to be great use one of those actors that have already played Superman. by brining in a new person to play superman like Routh, it just messes up the movie and the whole character. Superman returns was a huge failure and the reason why was because of the actors. if Tom Welling was in Superman returns I can bet all of you that the DVD’s would be flying off the selves. There are many people I know of who started becoming superman fans thanks to success of Smallville, and that wouldn’t have happened without the great actor Tom Welling and his great version of Clark Kent. That should tell Hollywood right there that Tom welling is the best choice for Superman.

Brandon Routh should never grace the big screen as Supes again. He didnt have the broad physique that Tom has pulled off for YEARS. Honestly, Superman is all powerful and all boring at times. Brandon really didnt get to do much action wise. I felt bad as the only fight scene he got was him getting whooped upon. Honestly look at all the other superhero final fights. It is hard knuckle or explosive drag out that makes the fans go YEAHH. I got more on edge watching Tom Welling’s fights on Smallville. Maybe thats why i feel he is best suited. We all like a good fight and i bet Tom would pull it off if Supes lost his powers. Plus he has technically been superman the longest that i know of. He has basically gotten use to all the powers and responsibilities from events of Smallville. If anything at least do a Smallville Movie with him as Superman and saving Lois for the first time from Lex, Metallo,Darkseid, or anybody that can give him a run for his money. Cause nobody likes a hero that is just THAT DANG STRONG that there is no point in opposing them.

With all due respect to Tom Welling, he simply doesn’t resemble Superman as an adult. The problem with “Smallville” fans (of which I am one…) is that they are not objective about this point. Love him or not, Brandon Routh, if he were to really muscle up (and I mean, say 50 + lbs.), he really looks the part, jawline and all. I saw some pics of him on a fan site recently that convinced me of that totally. In a few years, he would “grow” into the part, and when his face matures, he will resemble the classic Superman to a tee. Plus, he really didn’t do a bad job in ‘Superman Returns’; the story just had little action. I think fans should be fair with him and give him some credit. Anyway, this is just my opinion, but I urge everyone to give Brandon Routh a second look because he really has what it takes to be Superman.

I am just one person, but I have the understanding that you won’t have a big movie unless you have movie fans. I know for a fact people don’t like the continuous change of superheros. The people like to put a face to them. I read an add about why Superman Returns was not as big of a hit as it could be. The reason lies in the fact that everyone loved Christopher Reeves. Now we can move past that, but seriously, yes the heros are bigger than the actor, but if you are able to keep the same actors, the people will like it more, the people who watch the movies will like it more. Putting out more and more movies about the different heroes will just turn the movie fans off. If you want the money and you want the movie to be a big success, somewhere along the line your going to have to give up on the peoples demands. You’ll see just as I have, for example I know atleast a handful of people who to this day still haven’t watched the new Batman, I personally loved it, but this sort of thing will only continue to happen.

I thought Brandon Routh played a very good superman and I let my bias for Tom as Clark Kent aka superman be put to rest when I saw the movie Superman Returns and enjoyed the movie. Don’t get me wrong, I am an avid fan of Smallville (but I don’t have CW :-( wah) and all the actors including Tom, (love) Kristen. But, Kevin Spacey as Lex… what were they thinking? I’m also a fan of Kevin Spacey as well, but I would’ve liked to see someone else in that spot. Ok, nuff said, that’s my 2 cents.

This is why Marvel’s Avengers movie will destroy the Justice League. I think it’s more confusing having Superman/Batman played by different actors on the big screen apart from their standalone features. The poor Superman franchise has been ruined with the wasted potential/useless writers of Smallville and the horrible Superman Returns (Brandon Routh in a Navy and Maroon costume with leather cape - in a terrible re-make of Superman 1).
