Heroes “Five Years Gone”: How in the world…?

by Grace on May 2nd, 2007

WHOA.

That’s all I could say about this Monday’s episode “Five Years Gone”.

Well. Maybe that’s not all I have to say, wait! But have you seen it? Have you seen it? whoa.

Five years have gone and the world is chaotic. Heroes turn against each other. Either you’re a terrorist saving people with abilities, or you’re government arresting people with abilities. Thing is, both sides have powers. It’s the parallel universe of Heroes and X-Men.

In this episode, we learned that Hiro was supposed to have killed Sylar after the explosion but Sylar regenerated using abilities he took from Claire. Hiro doesn’t believe Sylar is dead, Peter thinks so.

And so we think Claire is dead. Until she turns up waitressing in a diner apparently set up by her dad Bennet as her new identity. So if Claire is alive, is Sylar truly dead?

Bennet is on a deal with the government - he turns over the dangerous ones and gets to hide the innocent. Until Matt Parkman pulls the deal off, arrests everyone on Bennet’s hideout list and kills Hana.

Matt Parkman, now head of Homeland Security, leads the pack in arresting other special people. I don’t know what his gripe is, why he turned against his own kind, but there’s a lot of hatred and anger there. The Haitian’s with him too - still silent, still a ‘yes-man’. Too bad. Do these two think they’re really with the good side?

The most deceived of all is still Mohinder. He thinks he’s doing good by making an “antidote” to the gene that gives people their abilities? Hello, Professor of Genetics! Unless it’s one gene, and there’s a protein to block it, then maybe yeah you can create a “vaccine/therapy” that takes that gene’s function out. But you can not change a person’s genetic make-up.

Nathan Petrelli. Mr. President. It wasn’t such a surprise that Nathan’s so cold and calculating, since he’s always been that way. But how he turned out in this episode is scary. Until we find out that Nathan is Sylar.

Sylar killed Nathan. And placed himself in as President he painted five years ago after killing Isaac. And in this episode, Sylar killed Claire too, which now makes him indestructible. Even Peter will be no match for him, if this future continues.

That’s why present Hiro needs to make things right, because there is no conceivable way that this future will ever be bright if Sylar isn’t killed in the present. According to the prophetic comics, Hiro will stab Sylar.

Peter admits he is the exploding man. Not Sylar. Nathan covered for him to protect him. But if Peter exploded and he didn’t die, and Sylar wasn’t the bomb, killing him won’t stop the bomb. Killing him won’t be bad either, but it won’t stop New York from exploding.

How can a hero who has never used his sword even manage someone like the Nemesis? Will he even have the time to train?

Next episode, “The Hard Part”. Next Monday. Don’t ever miss it.
