Heroes episode 2.09 “Cautionary Tales” review

by Grace on November 19th, 2007

Heroes: Generations” has just gotten climactic! This is the episode to say “no way!”

The Episode “Cautionary Tales” should have been subtitled “Family - the tie that binds us“, because it focused on just four main families and the unique relationships within each -the Nakamuras, the Parkmans, the Bennets, and the Bishop/Company. A lot of shockers in this episode, and scenes that pull at your heart. There’s still nothing compared to season One’s “Company Man” but this one is quite up there!

Hiro Nakamura finds out that his father Kaito was murdered while he was away in the past. Devastated, he goes back in time to the day his father died. Father and son had a very touching reunion. Whatever gap may have been created by Hiro’s strict upbringing, the conversation between father and son bridged that gap and brought closure to their relationship. Hiro heard his father being proud of him, and Kaito found his son respecting the elder Nakamura’s wisdom. With peace, hiro laid his father to rest. But not before he found out who the killer was. And no surprise to us, but still a shock to Hiro — Takezo Kensei!

Meanwhile, Matt Parkman discovers his mind powers are growing stronger. He not only can listen in on people’s thoughts, he can actually control people’s actions with his own thoughts! It must be exhilarating to have that power over other people, to make them do what you want just by thinking about it! Matt was able to convince Angela Petrelli to tell him the truth about the Company, who killed Kaito Nakamura, and the other Company founders. Finally, with a bleeding nose as she tried to resist Matt’s powers, Angela gave up the name of the last member, who had asked Angela to protect her identity. Even when Angela told Matt that if he took this secret from her, Matt “would not just be like your father, but you are your father”, in the end Matt gave in to this new power that he has. And that makes him more dangerous and scary now, like his father was.

Bob Bishop, the Company’s new top man introduces Elle as none else than his own daughter! Elle’s power of electricity does not compare to her maniacal psychopathic fascination with men and pain. And then you wonder if Bob brought this on his own daughter when he put Elle’s powers to test. As a child he had her tested in the Company lab, and then erased her memory of that awful incident. And yet, later in the episode, Bob did not waste getting Elle back in trade of Claire. Is Bob simply using his child, or does he really care for her in his dysfunctional kind of way?

The Bennets prepare to leave Costa Verde when Noah found out Claire’s identity may have been compromised with the stunt she did with West. Claire defied her father and went to the cheerleading practice, where Bob finds Claire and abducts her. Then Bob gets Claire’s blood. If there are two things that are predictable about Noah Bennet, it’s his devotion to his family, and his merciless killer instinct. But Noah Bennet’s life is falling apart and he tries to piece the puzzle that he saw in Isaac’s painting. Will he really die? How is West involved? Claire kissing West as he lay there dead.. will his daughter betray him?

When Claire gets abducted by Bob’s Company, all father and killer instincts in Noah surfaced. Without hesitation, he would have killed Mohinder if West didn’t stop him. He tortured Elle to get her talking. He would have shot Bob too… but Mohinder got to him first. Dead on the eye. And the painting fulfilled its prophecy.

And so Noah died.

But the blood that Bob got from Claire when he abducted her… the blood that can cure anyone, which was meant as an antidote to the virus that plagued Nikki… that blood was transfused into Noah’s dead body and he resurrected.

Claire Bennet has just become the most valuable property on earth.
