Heroes’ creator Tim Kring interview - season 1 finale slingshots to season 2

Tim Kring talked to Sci Fi Wire about plans for next season, the fate of old and new characters, and this Monday’s explosive finale.

The season-ender will be a definite cliffhanger. But instead of having us bite our fingers in frustration, waiting for what will happen three months down the road, Tim says,

No, I think it’ll be intriguing more than frustrating. The idea was to end one idea of the show, one story, and then slingshot you into the next season.”

And how is this going to happen?

There are several new characters coming in the immediate future. The idea of the show from the start was always to basically honor the origin story of the first sort of blush and discovery of these powers. And so, in order to do that, new characters will have to be cycled into the show. And by extension, older characters will cycle out of the show.

He’s always stuck to his philosophy that the show is all about the story, before it being about the characters or actors. We know next season is two-pronged, the second volume being ‘Generations’ and the third ‘Origins’.

The idea of multiple generations has started to crop up on the show. And in the second season we will deal with that more, hence the title, ‘Generations.’

Whereas ‘Generations’ will explore how the families of our heroes came to be, with genetics playing a huge part, the third volume is something different. ‘Origins’ will feature new characters each week. Hence, the viewers can jump in and enjoy an episode without feeling like they got lost somewhere along a continuous storyline.

The idea was that we wanted to make it easy for viewers to be able to come on in the second season. And we thought if we wrapped the show too tightly around itself, so that you had to watch 23 episodes before, It would be harder for a new viewer to find the show. And we always want to be a show that has the barrier of entry low enough so that new viewers can join if they want.

More than ever, I can’t wait for Monday’s episode to begin! Oh, and Heroes the Series hints that it may be a 2-hour episode(!).
