Heroes 2.07 “Out of Time” recap

by Grace on November 6th, 2007

This is why Heroes is such a great show! This episode is reminiscent of the first season with enough drama, suspense, ‘wow’ moments and discoveries that make you want to want to watch the next episodes now.

Heroes episode 2.07 “Out of Time”.

ep2The Bennets live in danger (again). Noah Bennet is getting frazzled in Odessa, Ukraine. The paintings he got from Ivan didn’t make any sense but it culminates in Noah’s death. One of the paintings show Mohinder with a gun and then another of Noah dead. He suspects that Mohinder may have something to do with this so he calls the Indian doctor. But Mohinder tells him that the Company doesn’t trust him and has given him Nikki as partner to track his move.

At the Bennet house, Claire wakes up to find West has invited himself in for breakfast and her mom finds him ‘adorable’. She was upset that he would show up like that but, when West reasons that he only wanted to be part of her family, her emotions give in and she lets him stay. She confesses that she has to tell West something before they go any further in their relationship, when West suddenly sees Noah appearing in their doorway. Claire frantically tells West that HRG is her dad and he flies away in anger and confusion.

Mr. Bennet learns that Claire does have a boyfriend and he tells the whole family to pack but Claire refuses and tells him they’ll have to go without her.

The legendary “Sword Saint” of Japan. Hiro, Yaeko and her father is in captivity at White Beard’s camp, brought there by Takezo Kensei who asked for half of Japan and Yaeko as payment for giving over Hiro to ep2the enemy. Now it was clear exactly how Kensei got White Beard to think that Hiro would be of value but there they were. Hiro is drugged with opium and unable to use his powers so Yaeko frees herself and tells her he must get them out. So groggy as he is, Hiro succeeds. Outside the camp, Hiro decides to go back and destroy White Beard’s guns. He tells Yaeko that Kensei’s pain has made him cruel but inside him is a good man and he will risk his life to get the warrior back to being one of the good guys.

At the munitions depot of White Beard, Hiro finds Takezo waiting for him and a swords fight ensues. Hiro still tries to convince Takezo that he is supposed to save Japan but the mercenary’s real character shows when he says he never claimed to be a hero. Kensei swears that everything Hiro loves will be laid to waste. Finally Hiro sees that Takezo will never change and transports himself out of the tent just as the gun powders explode.

ep2Later on under the cherry blossoms, Yaeko tells Hiro that he is the true hero of Japan and all the credit under Takezo’s name was all his doing. Hiro realizes that he almost destroyed history by staying too long in ancient Japan. Yaeko promises to pass the legend of the Sword Saint and the lovers part ways.

Maury’s in the house. At the Company, Matt Parkman and Nathan Petrelli appear and tells them that Maury is now after killing Bob. Bob orders an immediate evacuation order and tells Mohinder and Nikki that they must inject Maury with the virus. Mohinder refuses because the virus can be lethal even as it removes a person’s abilities. He is assured that once they transfuse his blood into Maury then nobody has to die. Bob also instructs Matt that he can stop his father - they have the same abilities and it is beyond mind reading. Father and son can control what the brain controls - emotions, thoughts, senses. Matt denies he can do this but know he must learn quickly to stop his father from killing them.

While Mohinder and Nikki get the virus, Maury distorts Nikki’s reality and she sees DL telling her that the company is only using her and the only way she can get her life and son back is to kill Bob. She punches Mohinder square on the nose and knocks him several feet away and goes after Bob. Nathan tells Nikki she can control the nightmare and she injects the virus into herself to get the nightmare out.

ep2Meanwhile, Matt is at Molly’s bedside and tearfully tells her how wrong he was to use her to find his father. Somehow her vital signs show response when Matt tells how much he loves her. Matt goes to inspect what the commotion was in Bob’s office but when he opens the door he finds himself in another room, in an apartment, with Molly, who tells him this is where Maury keeps her in her nightmares. Matt calls out to his dad and brings him into the room with them. The room is their old apartment when Maury walked out on Matt. Maury tells his son that it hurt him to walk away from them but there is no prison that can trap Maury. Matt tells his father that he can trap him in that same room - this is Maury’s nightmare after all. Matt goes out the door, trapping Maury his own mind.

ep2Nikki gets a transfusion using Mohinder’s blood but they find out it’s not working as an antidote. The Shanti virus has evolved and there is no cure. Bob tells Mohinder they will destroy every last vial of the virus but instructs him to get one more person that can help them. Claire Bennet. Her regenerative abilities can be used as a cure. Mohinder confesses that he’s been working with Bennet to take down the company but now he’s not entirely sure if Noah is right. Bob gives Mohinder a gun and tells him to be prepared. There’s a storm coming.

The Shanti virus epidemic. Peter and Caitlin find themselves in a future New York, and sees an evacuation order for June 14, 2008. The Homeland Security get them to a decontamination area and they got separated. An agent interrogating Peter says that his records show him to be dead and wonder why he doesn’t have any signs of infection. Peter learns that a Shanti virus began infecting people on March 20, 2007 and it spread quickly around the globe killing 93% of the world’s population. He was shown a room full of quarantined corpses.

ep2Later, Angela Petrelli, whom Peter doesn’t remember, tells him he must use his abilities to stop this epidemic. His brother Nathan had died in the first outbreak and now Peter is the only one who can use his abilities and help everyone. Frustrated, Peter tells her he can even control these things and calmly Angela tells him he needs to remember. Suddenly, Peter does remember everything and they tearfully reunite.

Adam Monroe. Nathan asks Bob more questions as he doesn’t trust him. Like his mother and Linderman, he says that their group of people has always been about half-truths. He asks about Adam Monroe and Bob tells Nathan that Adam was the one who convinced them that they belonged together and they can change the world. He was the visionary and with his ep2abilities he thinks of himself as a god. Adam wanted to punish humanity to save the world and both Maury and Linderman were his disciples. The company locked him up but two weeks ago, Adam escaped the facility where he was held.

Peter transports back to the present time, in that room in Montreal and meets Adam Montreal - also known as Takezo Kensei. He and Peter are going to change history.

    -=Spoiler Alert=-

This eppy was awesome! It has all the right components of a promotional eppy. It answers one or two question (i.e. how is the nightmare man to be defeated, does Matt have more abilities, who is Adam Monroe) but leaves the audience with even more questions afterwards (i.e. How did Kensei ‘Adam’ get to the future?, is his ability really healing? Or sponge, like Peter’s?) Plus, awesome happening: The heroes are all coming together. :D

    -=End Spoiler Alert=-

i think that monroe/kensei is the petrellis’ father. mr. petrelli is the only image in the old picture that is blurred, and the facial features could fit kensei. i’m going to continue to think this until proven otherwise. like matt’s dad, it’s possible kensei, if claire is his granddaughter, has healing PLUS has agelessness–perhaps claire will eventually have this ability as well as part of her cell regeneration.

remember in star wars, when uncle owen told luke that luke’s father was dead, killed by darth vader? could be a similar gig with mr. petrelli’s “suicide”–he “killed himself” by basically stepping across a line that most of the others in his group disagreed with.

i also think hiro is going to jump back to rescue his dad, though whether he will succeed is in question. his dad might tell him not to help, or hiro might be unable to stop the killing for one reason or another.
