Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark in IRON MAN 2.

The return of Iron Man is featured as the cover of Entertainment Weekly, with Robert Downey Jr. in the upgraded version of his suit, along with the new villains Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Mickey Rourke. (Whiplash). Interesting enough, the Black Widow starts out as Stark’s new assistant Natasha, who replaced Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) when she was promoted to CEO of Stark Industries. And yea.. there’s a “weird male catfight fantasy” Paltrow tells EW. Check out the EW cover on newstands this week, and more exclusive bits at the SDCC…. this year, everything happens at SDCC…

Just today, IRON MAN 2 wrapped up its principal photography and the cast and crew say “sayonara” for a while… well, while the rest of Jon Favreau’s team work on post-production. Like I say often these days, we will likely get more scoop from SDCC later, so stay tuned.

IRON MAN 2 is scheduled for theaters on May 7, 2010.

Comingsoon.net gives an April 30, 2010 release date for the Iron Man sequel that resurrected Robert Downey Jr. into stardom.

Film Crunch confirmed the news of “Iron Man 2“, straight from the horses’ mouths themselves – director Jon Favreau and Stark-man Robert Downey Jr. The pair attended a live commentary at Santa Monica’s Aero Theater where a special screening of Iron Man was held on September 6. The script is being written by Justin Theroux, of the breakaway hit “Tropic Thunder“.

Thanks to The Game Jerk, watch the series of Q & A videos where Jon Favreau talked about where he wants Iron Man 2 to go -  to still circle the story around the Mandarin, and not to lose the origins but also have the superhero adapt to the advancing times. 

More good news – “The Avengers” spin-off was already conjured while Iron Man was being filmed, such as references with the visible S.H.I.E.L.D logos. So we can expect to see that movie in the future as well.
